Explanation of Member Categories
The CMS By-Laws call for a variety of membership levels for physicians who join the Capital Medical Society. Here is a brief description of each of these categories as outlined in our By-Laws. We discount membership during the first and second year of membership for physicians in the Active Category. This is to assist our new members as they begin to build a practice. Below is a description of the member categories from the By-Laws (Chapter I. Membership Section 1. Classification - Rights and Privileges):
This Society shall be composed of Active, Associate, Semi-Retired, Resident/Student and Retired members.
(A) Active Members shall be doctors of medicine or osteopathy licensed in the State of Florida engaged in the active practice of medicine, medical administration or medical education in the counties of Leon, Gadsden, Jefferson, Wakulla, State of Florida, who have met all eligibility requirements. They may vote and hold office. Specifically, only this category is eligible for election to our FMA Delegation.
(B) Associate Members shall be doctors of medicine or osteopathy licensed to practice medicine in the United States, not necessarily licensed in Florida. They must be in good standing in whatever state they are licensed. They may be employees of federal, state or local government; active military or faculty members of an accredited school of medicine in the state of Florida that pays special dues for all of its clinical faculty members. They may attend meetings and other benefits and functions of the Society, receive all publications; but not vote or hold office. They are not eligible for election to our FMA Delegation.
(C) Semi-retired Members shall be doctors who have retired from their original, full time practice but continue to work part-time, in some capacity of medical practice. This category is for CMS members who do not consider themselves fully retired.
(D) Retired Members shall be doctors who are fully retired from active medical practice and are transitioning from Active or Associate CMS members to Retired status. Retired members have a choice between two rates of retired dues. One rate includes payment for meals at CMS membership meetings. The other reduced rate does not include meals; therefore these members pay separately for meals as they attend meetings. It is important to the medical society to keep our retired physicians engaged in CMS.
These rates for Retired Physicians also apply to young physicians who are in the stage of life, starting families. They may elect to go part-time or leave practice altogether for a period of time as they raise children. These "retired" or “semi-retired" physicians can choose either category of retired dues. We like to keep our young physicians involved with the medical society.
(E) Resident Members shall be hospital interns and residents serving in approved training programs, specifically the TMH Family Medicine Residency Program. They will be encouraged to attend all meetings and functions of the Society and receive all publications. There are two seats on the CMS Board of Governors reserved for a 2nd Year Resident and a 3rd year Resident.
(F) Medical Students shall be students in the FSU-College of Medicine. They will be encouraged to attend meetings of the Society, but may not vote or hold office. Two students every year serve on our Access to Care Committee. |
